Symposium: 11 am - 3 pm
Location: Royal BC Museum, Victoria B.C.
Newcombe Conference Hall
We encourage you to express your interest in attending SWEEET in your conference registration as we can accommodate a maximum of 80 people.
Our intended audience for this workshop includes male and female graduate students working towards a career in science, post-doctoral fellows, and pre-tenure level faculty.
For our 2017 theme "Addressing Gender Bias in Ecology and Evolution", SWEEET will host a workshop for all individuals of all genders to learn about the role that implicit gender bias plays in the scientific landscape. Our goal is to provide an informative session where participants first learn about the role of gender bias in institutional settings, including its effects on key aspects of career building, such as recruitment and evaluation. We have designed the symposium to include a large amount of time to discuss the workshop materials, as we have learned from the past that this is one of the best ways to learn from our panelists, audience, and their experiences.

Invited Speakers:
|
Dr. Marlene Zuk
"Gender equity and myths of merit" Marlene Zuk is a highly respected evolutionary biologist and behavioural ecologist at the University of Minnesota, where she is Associate Dean for Faculty. Her research uses invertebrate systems to study the evolution of mating behaviour and secondary sexual characters in natural populations. Marlene has published numerous papers and books on evolutionary biology, and has also written about feminism and women in science. |
Dr. Aerin Jacob
"Learning to be a Better Ally" Aerin Jacob is a conservation scientist and ecologist studying how natural disturbances affect biodiversity and ecosystem services. Previously a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Victoria, Aerin now works as a Conservation Scientist for the Yellowstone to Yukon Initiative. Aerin is also active in science outreach, including supporting diversity in science. |
Dr. Judy Myers
"CSEE and Women in Ecology and Evolution" Judy Myers is a professor emerita in the Biodiversity Centre at the University of British Columbia where she has studied insect ecology and control of invasive weeds for over 40 years. Her research has focused on the role of viral infection in the population cycles of western tent caterpillars as well as the ecology and biological control of invasive plants such as knapweed. Judy has an ongoing interest in the challenges for women in science and has fought for policies for hiring that were more likely to include women. |
